Everywhere overview

Everywhere is file search for macOS, built to be faster and more reliable than Spotlight.

Faster: results appear in about 2 ms per keystroke across millions of files, updating as you type rather than after you stop.

More reliable: Spotlight deliberately skips ~/Library, package contents, and anything inside a .noindex folder, and it ranks and truncates rather than showing every match. That is why a file you can see in Finder can come back as no results. Everywhere searches all of it and shows everything that matches.

It covers every mounted volume, and it remembers external drives after you unplug them, so you can find out which drive a file is on before you go looking for the drive.

What's new in version 2.14.3

  • Faster search. A new trigram index means typical searches on a large disk now return in a few milliseconds instead of tens of milliseconds. The index is built once per scan and cached, so it costs nothing on later launches.
  • Search inside documents is clearer. While a new search is running, the panel says so and dims the previous results instead of leaving them looking current.
  • Time Machine drives are no longer indexed. A Time Machine disk holds a complete copy of your Mac for every backup ever taken, so scanning one could run for hours. These are now detected and skipped, and the menu says so.
  • Every external drive has an on/off switch. Open External Drives in the menu bar and click a drive to include or exclude it. Choices are remembered per drive, even if it remounts under a different name.
  • Dropbox, iCloud Drive and Google Drive folders are listed in Settings. macOS hides these inside the Library folder, where the folder picker could not reach them. They now appear with an Add button, and the picker can browse there.
  • Opening an app brings it to the front. Previously an app that was already running would stay behind whatever window you were in.
  • The app no longer becomes unresponsive during heavy file activity. Index updates for changed files now happen off the main thread.
  • Onboarding shows real progress. The first scan has two phases, and the second one used to leave a frozen number on screen for minutes.
  • Requires macOS 13 or later. Universal (Apple silicon and Intel).

I stopped trusting Spotlight a long time ago. Not because it is slow, though it is, but because it lies. A file sits there in Finder, plainly visible, and Spotlight tells you it does not exist. Anyone who has tried to find something in ~/Library, or inside an app bundle, or on a drive they unplugged last week, knows the feeling. Everywhere does the boring thing brilliantly: it shows you every match, every time, and it does it before you finish typing. Six million files, results in about two milliseconds, updating on every keystroke rather than after you stop. The first run reads the disk once and takes half a minute. After that it just knows. The part that won me over was external drives. Plug one in and it indexes itself. Unplug it and the files stay searchable, so you can find the photo and know which disk to go and get. Nothing else on the Mac does that. Then there is contains: which searches the text inside PDFs, Word and Pages files rather than just their names, and finds a document you saved a minute ago. Spotlight was still returning nothing for the same file two minutes later. No account, no server, no network, no telemetry. A menu bar icon, Option and Space, and your files appear. It costs nineteen dollars once. It is the thing I assumed macOS already had.

This is the search app that Mac was missing Every Mac user knows the moment. You can see the file in Finder. You type its name into Spotlight. Nothing comes back. Everywhere is instant file search for macOS, and it is built on a simple idea: show every match, every time, and do it before you finish typing. Faster than Spotlight, and not by a little Everywhere keeps its own index of every file on your Mac. On a machine with 6.1 million files that index is a single 275 MB file, and a query returns in about two milliseconds. Results update on every keystroke instead of after you stop typing, so you watch the list narrow as you type rather than waiting for it to think. The first run reads your disk once, in about thirty seconds. After that it stays current in the background using the same filesystem events macOS itself uses, so a file saved a moment ago is findable a moment later. More reliable than Spotlight, which is the real problem Spotlight will not show you results from ~/Library or from inside application bundles, even though it has them indexed. It ranks and truncates rather than listing every match. That is why a file you can see in Finder can come back as no results, and why "Spotlight is not finding my files" is one of the most searched macOS questions there is. Everywhere indexes those places and shows every match, on every mounted volume. Folders you deliberately marked .noindex stay skipped, and Spotlight's own privacy exclusions can be imported during setup, because hiding something on purpose should be respected. External drives, including the ones you unplugged Plug in an external drive and Everywhere indexes it on its own and watches it for changes. Unplug it and its files stay searchable, so you can find what is on a disk sitting in a drawer and know exactly which one to reach for. For photographers, video editors and anyone with an archive spread across several drives, this is the featur Search inside your documents, not just their names Type contains:henderson and Everywhere searches the text, PowerPoint, Pages, Keynote and Numbers files. This is the best search app that I have ever come across. Spotlight surfaces what Apple wants to surface but Everywhere surfaces whar I want it to surface every single time. Thank you for creating this! And the lifetime buy is the best.
